DRMS MINE WATER SAMPLING PROGRAM: SAMPLE LOCATIONS AND
PROTOCOL
Barrett Lavergne
Bowie Resources LLC
Introduction:
The purpose of the DRMS Mine Water Sampling Program is to collect water
inflow from multiple locations for certain parameter analysis to determine if the Bowie
No. 2 mine will impact the surface or subsurface water. Compliance with the Hydrologic
Monitoring Plan 2.05.6 of the Permit Application Coal Mining in Colorado, is
determined by monitoring springs of water flow of 5 gallons or more per minute, in or
adjacent to the permit area. Monitoring these springs annually, allows for field testing
and lab parameter testing at each monitoring site. Annual monitoring, facilitates the
identification of any impact the mine is having on the balance of the hydrologic cycle.
The parameters included in the lab testing are included in Surface Water List 1.
Locations:
The sample locations picked for the annual monitoring sites were decided based
on hydro-geologic conditions. Consistent water inflow trends in Bowie No. 2 Mine have
been seen near normal faults, reverse faults, strike-slip faults, open joints, roof bolts, and
lithologic drilling locations. Steady water flows have been observed throughout the mine
near major faults. Water inflow trends seem to diminish in these areas as the mining
faces work further away, thus creating most of the heavy drainage near working faces.
Observations:
Monitoring site No. 1 is located in cross cut 1 of the 1 S` East mains in entry No. 2
(see Location #1). This sample location was picked due to its low elevation, relative to
surrounding areas, which allows the water to drop from open cracks and joints, and then
guided along gutters and drip pans to the sample location. There is clearly an abundant
amount of water being guided to this location, evident by the pooling of water in the
nearby sump, although water flow trends have decreased in this area. The general
conditions observed from the sample taken on 07/07/09 at 12:30 were that of a clear
water sample with a small quantity of suspended solids. The field parameter tests
demonstrated slightly basic water with a pH of 8.9 and a conductivity of 5.7 mS/cm. The
flow rate of 5 gal/min of this slightly cool sample, had a temperature of 19 degrees
Celsius. This slightly cool temperature is most likely due to the availability of contact
time between the low temperature and high velocity intake airway.
Monitoring site No. 2 was picked due to the location near the D5 fault in the
North-East Sub-Mains in cross cut No. 4, entry 2 (see Location #2). The location of this
site was taken from the end of a pipe that was being guided to a sump. The source of
water to this sump was identified from a pump in beltline pumping highly suspended
solid water. This site location is labeled as contaminated due to the source of water. No
water sample was taken and should be ceased in the future at this location.
Monitoring site No. 3 was picked due to its association with the D5 fault in the
"old" 2°d North Mains, between cross cut 6 and 7 in entry No. 2 (See Location #3). No
sample was taken due to the lack of availability of H2O. This is evidence of diminishing
