They have succesfully patched it in the past. We'll need to see if
it is near it's life expectancy before requiring replacement. In either case, we will need a TR to cover their proposed
remedial course of action, including handling and disposal of the liquid and solid toxics in the pond.
From: Marshall, Travis
To: Shuey, Steve
Sent: Fri Feb 05 09:40:23 2010
Subject: Logan Wash pond leak
Steve
Just got a call from Bruce Smith about a leak in the pond liner at Logan Wash. The leak is -800 ml/min. and is captured
by a leak collection system and pumped back into the pond. Preliminary samples have confirmed the water in the leak
collection system is from the pond and follow up samples will be collected to confirm that the preliminary samples are
accurate. The liner is -26 years old and may need to be replaced, so my question is.... Can we require them to replace
the liner as soon as the conditions (snow/temp.) allow? It sounds like they want to find the leak and patch it but I think we
need have them replace the entire liner. Let me know what you think.
Travis Marshall
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
101 South 3rd, Suite 301
Grand Junction, CO 81501
T: 970.241.2042
C: 970.623.5596
http://mining.state.co.us/
