• 1.0 INTRODUCTION
The Bowie Mine No. 2 is a subsurface coal mine owned and operated by Bowie Resources, LLC
(Bowie). The Bowie Mine No. 2 is located on the north side of Colorado State Highway 133,
approximately 3.5 miles northeast of Paonia in Delta County, Colorado. The mine produces
approximately 3 to 5 million tons of coal per year. Coal waste from the preparation plant as
well as some high ash coal is disposed at a coal waste disposal area located north of Bowie
Road. Buckhorn Geotech, Inc. (BGI) was retained by Bowie to evaluate stability of the
proposed Coal Waste Disposal Area No. 4 (CDWA No. 4). BGI's initial stability evaluation is
documented by a 2007 report (BGI, 2007). The initial report evaluated stability for ultimate
heights up to 118 feet measured vertically from the toe of the refuse bank to the crest. This
report presents revised stability evaluations for an ultimate refuse height of 150 feet.
2.0 PROJECT BACKGROUND
The CWDA No. 4 is located immediately west of CWDA No. 2, immediately east of CWDA No. 1
and north of Topsoil Pile "E ". CWDA No. 4 is essentially a western expansion of CWDA No. 2.
The location of the CWDA No. 4 is presented on Drawings 1 and 2 in Appendix A of this report
and indicated on the photographs below.
•
•
Bowie No 2 Refuse Pile No 4 2009 Revised srability.doc
Projed u06 -481 -003
CWDA No. 1 CWDA No. 4 CWDA No. 2
Approx.
