EXHIBIT H - WILDLIFE INFORMATION
Wildlife expected to inhabit the Last Chance Mine Permit Area is typical of that found in the
Colorado Plateau region. General information on wildlife in the region is published in the San
Juan/San Miguel Resource Management Plan (BLM 1984) and the Mesa Creek Coordinated
Resource Management Plan (BLM 1993).
Table H-1 lists threatened, endangered, and sensitive wildlife species (including candidate
species) that could occur within Montrose County (Colorado Natural Heritage Database 2005).
The table also describes the potential for occurrence on the Last Chance Mine Permit Area.
Table H-1. Federal and State listed Threatened, Endangered, and Sensitive Wildlife
Species occurring in western Montrose County.

Category Common Scientific Name Statusr Occurrence in the Last Chance Mine
Name Permit Area
Bald Eagle Haliaeetus Threatened Bald eagles winter in riparian habitat along
leucocephalus (F,S) the Dolores River. Eagles probably forage for
carrion in deer and elk winter-concentration
areas such as Paradox Valley and Davis
Mesa.
Birds Gunnison sage Centrocercus Candidate Gunnison sage grouse potentially occur
grouse minimus (S) Sensitive within Montrose County.
(B,U)
Ferruginous Buteo regalis Candidate This species may use portions of the Davis
hawk (S) Sensitive Mesa during winter migration.
(B,U)
Townsend's Plecotus Candidate This species is know to use uranium mines in
big-eared bat townsendii (S) Sensitive Colorado and may occur on Davis Mesa.
(B,U)
Spotted bat Euderma Sensitive This species is known to use uranium mines
macukatum (B,U) in Colorado. Spotted bats are likely to occur
on Davis Mesa in portions that contain
Mammals sandstone cliffs and outcroppings. Because
they are crevice-roosters rather than cave-
roosters, it is unlikely that they would occupy
any of the mines, but they could use other
habitat on the Davis Mesa.
Fringed myotis Myotis Sensitive This species is known to use uranium mines
thysanodes (B) in Colorado and may occur in Davis Mesa.
Midget faded Crotalus Candidate This species would be expected to inhabit
Reptiles and rattlesnake oreganus (S) Sensitive abandoned mines and structures in the Davis
Amphibians concolor (B) Mesa area. The range and status of this
species is currently under discussion.
Leopard lizard Gambelina Candidate This species may occur in semi-desert areas
wislizenii (S) Sensitive on or near the Davis Mesa.
(B)
r F = federally listed, S = state listed, B = BLM listed, U = U.S. Forest Service sensitive species
There is no designated critical habitat for endangered species within the Last Chance Mine area.
However, critical habitat does exist for threatened and endangered fish downstream from the
program area.
Last Chance Mine - April 2009
H-1
