like to know what these MDL's are in order to verify that the MDL is low <br />enough to be below the suitability level for each constituent. <br />5. Based on Division inspections, is all of the rock at the Paonia sewage lagoons <br />really sandstone? If it all is (or at least appears to be) that is fine. If, however, <br />there are other rock types, additional samples and analyses may be warranted. <br />The two most important analyses for determining whether a material is acid forming are <br />pyritic sulfur and acid base potential (ABP). Based on the reported results, there is no <br />pyritic sulfur (none detected) and the ABP is 62 tons CaC03/1,000 tons material. An <br />ABP greater than -5 tons CaC03/1,000 tons material is considered acceptable. In the case <br />of the sample from the Bowie No. 2 sandstone, there is a net neutralization potential (a <br />positive number for the ABP) which is acceptable. BRL also analyzed for other forms of <br />sulfur including sulfate, organic sulfur and total sulfur. All of these forms of sulfur have <br />a limited potential for forming acid mine drainage. In all three analyses (sulfate, organic <br />sulfur and total sulfur) there was none detected. Based on these analyses, the Division <br />can conclude that the sample from the sandstone material transported to the Paonia <br />Sewage lagoons is not acid forming. <br />The next consideration is whether the sandstone transported from the Bowie No. 2 Mine <br />vent shaft excavation is toxic. Potential toxicity is determined by analyzing for various <br />metals, pH and sodium absorption ratio (SAR).
