2009 Hole Plugging
All plugging activities were overseen by Blue Mountain Energy, Inc. Engineering Dept. staff.
Return Shaft #3 (RS-3)
On November 1, 2009 RS-3 was permanently sealed by backfilling from the bottom to the surface with
soil previously stockpiled on site. Cook's Trucking provided the equipment and operators to perform
this task. The portion of the steel liner projecting above the surface was then cut flush with the
concrete pad and a 6+ inch concrete plug was poured on the top.
LWB9-2, LWB9-3, SC-TG29, SC-HG26, and the 11" open borehole adjacent to RS-4
In November 2009 these holes were completely backfilled with concrete directly from cement trucks.
The bottoms of SC-TG29 and SC-HG26 were first plugged by dropping long capped steel pipes to the
mine floor to prevent the concrete from pouring into the mine. A thicker aggregate mix was then placed
down the hole to complete the bottom plug prior to backfilling with cement.
The 11" open borehole adjacent to RS-4 was also backfilled with cement. This hole initially bridged off
at approximately 300 feet. Four bags of concrete were poured down the hole to ensure a competent
bottom plug. The remainder of the hole was backfilled with cement directly from cement trucks.
SC-SL1, SC-HG54, SC-HG44-2 and SC-TG33
These holes were initially constructed without plugging the outside annuluses of the pipes with cement.
In November 2009 the inside casings to the mine were plugged by placing obstructions in the casings at
over 20 feet and placing %2 bag of concrete mix on top to form an initial seal. The inside casings were
then lifted from their support structures and lowered to the mine floor if they were still free hanging.
The inside annulus of the surface casings, outside annulus of the inside casings (portions still open) and
remaining upper inside annulus were backfilled with cement directly from cement trucks.
SC-HG11, SC-HG20, SC-HG33, SC-HG56, SC-TG56, SC-HG59, LWB7-1
The outside annulus of the steel casing was cemented from the mine to the surface during initial
construction of these holes. The inside pipes to the mine were plugged in November 2009 by placing
obstructions in the pipes at over 20 feet and placing %2 bag of concrete mix on top to form an initial seal.
The remainder of the upper annulus was filled with cement once the initial concrete had adequately set
to provide structural support for the cement.
