Sedimentation Pond E controls runoff from a portion of the surface facilities, including the main coal stockpile <br />area, prior to discharging to Foidel Creek. TCC will survey the pond per the previously outlined schedule. The <br />same criteria will be used to determine if the pond requires cleaning. If so, the material will be removed and hauled <br />to the refuse pile or pit for disposal. The pond is inspected during CDPS sampling and the v-notch weir is checked <br />to determine if it is functioning correctly. Repairs are made on an as-needed basis. The pond is also inspected <br />quarterly to assess the condition of the embankment and spillways and to determine if it is functioning correctly. <br />Repairs are made on an as needed basis. The pond will be removed when it is no longer needed. The outlet works <br />will be removed, the embankment pushed back into the pond excavation and final graded to blend with the <br />surrounding terrain, and the area will be topsoiled and revegetated. <br />Sedimentation Pond F receives runoff from the surface facilities, reclaimed surface mine, spoil springs, and <br />underground mine discharge. TCC will survey the pond as per the previously outlined schedule. The same criteria <br />will be used to determine if the pond requires cleaning. If so, the material will be removed and hauled to the refuse <br />pile or pit for disposal. The pond is inspected during the periodic CDPS sampling, and the condition of the <br />measuring device is checked. Repairs are made on an as-needed basis. The measuring device is a cutthroat flume <br />located upstream of the road culvert. The weir, previously used to measure flows, did not function properly and <br />required significant maintenance, so a 12-inch cutthroat flume was installed to assure accurate flow measurements. <br />The pond will be removed when it is no longer needed. The outlet works will be removed, the rock in the <br />emergency spillway may be reclaimed or placed in the pond basin, the embankment will be pushed in and graded to <br />blend with the surrounding terrain, and the area will be topsoiled and revegetated. <br />Sedimentation Pond G receives runoff from a part of the surface facilities and the reclaimed surface mine. Pond G is also an MSHA pond, subject to regular monthly <br />inspections, except during the winter months. For the MSHA inspections, the outlet works and pond embankment <br />are inspected, and any necessary repairs made in a timely basis. If so, the material will be removed and hauled to the refuse pile or pit for disposal. The pond is inspected <br />during the CDPS sampling, and the weir is checked to see if it is working correctly. Any problems are noted and <br />repairs made as needed. The pond will be removed when it is no longer needed. The outlet works will be removed, <br />the rock in the emergency spillway may be reclaimed or placed in the pond basin, the embankment will be pushed <br />in and graded to blend with the surrounding terrain, and the area will be topsoiled and revegetated. <br />Other Impoundments <br />Wad eSump - In order to provide for better drainage from the west ramp of the portal, the drainage system has <br />been modified. The two culverts that carry water from the west ramp will be plugged, and the water will be <br />diverted toward the Wadge sump. Water will course to a <br />small sediment dam which holds a 4-inch overflow pipe. Once the water reaches the top of the sediment dam, the <br />water will enter the 4-inch overflow pipe and then drain to the sump. This system will aid in settling out some <br />sediment from the water before it reaches the Wadge sump. From the sump, the water will be pumped up into <br />Ditch D-2. <br />Two water bodies, the Area 1 Pit Temporary Water Storage Basin and the Washplant I Thickener Overflow Sump, <br />utilized in conjunction with ongoing mine water handling operations, have existed for years and were not <br />previously identified or considered as "impoundments" under the regulatory definition. As a result of changes in <br />regulatory interpretation, however, the CDMG has determined that these existing water bodies fall under the broad <br />defmition of "impoundments" and should be identified and regulated as such.
