United States Forest Paonia P.O. Bog 1030
USDA Department of Service Ranger District N Rio Grande Ave.
_ Agriculture PHONE NO. 970-5274131 Paonia, CO 81428
FAX 970-5274151
FEB 2 7 2008 File Code: 2820-4
Date: February 25, 2008
°•'.`
Dear Intereste t1 arty, Mining and Safety
The Grand Mesa-Uncompahgre-Gunnison National Forests (GMUG) is inviting public scoping
comments on a proposal from Bowie Resources, L.L.C. (Bowie), to construct a drill pad and drill
one water monitoring hole.
The purpose of this monitoring hole, located in Delta County, T.12S., R.91 W., Section 34 (see
attached map on reverse); is to provide the Bowie #2 Mine with hydrologic data on the quantity
and quality of water in underground sealed portions of the mine. The 250 foot deep hole is
proposed to be located along the Hubbard Creek Road; therefore no new disturbance is
necessary. Depending on the results of the monitoring and investigation, Bowie may propose to
drill an additional well on site. Once this determination is made, additional environmental
analysis will be completed.
Proposed drilling operations will involve utilizing stock tanks and other portable containment for
drill cuttings and mud, no reserve pits are necessary. During drilling, that portion of the road will
be closed to public motorized access. Bowie is proposing to perform the drilling in the spring of
2008.
The GMUG will be conducting an environmental analysis in accordance with the National
Environmental Policy Act on this proposal. This proposal is being released for a 30-day public
scoping period. The scoping period on this proposal ends 30 days following the date of
publication this legal notice. Scoping comments may be submitted in hard copy through the
mail, fax, delivered by hand, or emailed. Mail comments to: USFS, ATTN: Bowie Monitoring
Well, P.O. Box 1030, Paonia, Colorado 81428. Fax comments to (970) 527-4151. Hand
delivered written scoping comments will be accepted at the Paonia Ranger District Office, N.
Rio Grande, Paonia, Colorado, between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm., Monday-Friday,
except for federal holidays.
Electronic scoping comments will be accepted, and must be submitted as an ASCII compatible
format (e.g. *.odf, *.doc, *.txt, *.rtf), or PDF.
