Ill. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was an aerial inspection of the Roadside Portals Mine conducted by Harry Ranney of the
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety(DRMS). Aerial photographs were taken on
January 29, 2010 at approximately 11:41 PM. Weather conditions appeared to be clear and
sunny at the time of the flight. Mike Boulay of the DRMS reviewed the aerial photographs.
Eleven photographs were taken during the flyover. The DRMS experienced camera difficulties
during this aerial inspection. All of the photographs are overexposed and several are out of
focus. However, there were enough useable photos to prepare an aerial inspection report. Two
of the higher-quality color photographs are attached at the end of this inspection report.
Mine site areas visible in the photographs include the South Portal facilities, the UTL loop, and
the CRDA waste disposal sites. CRDA waste disposal site No. 2 and the UTL loop area and
Cameo Sand Offloading Facility are shown in Photograph No's 1 and 2 at the ends of this
inspection report. .There are no discernible activities visible in the photographs. The mine site
was mostly snow covered at the time of the inspection.
General Mine Compliance
All facility locations appeared to be well maintained. The mine site roads visible in the
photographs were mostly cleared of snow, and appeared to be in good condition. The CRDA
waste piles and all other site locations visible in the photographs appeared stable and no
significant erosion or other problems were identified with this aerial inspection.
