III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Kent Gorham of the Colorado Division of
Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (Division). This mine site is currently completing the final
stages of reclamation of disturbed areas. Ground conditions were snow-covered due to over
night and on-going snowfall.
Hydrologic Balance
Some minor down-cutting has occurred within the Pond 5 watershed where storm runoff exits
the reclaimed area and enters the natural channel on the way to the pond. At the next
opportunity, when equipment is on-site, this area should be reshaped and possibly armored
to prevent future problems.
The channel below this feature was also traversed on-foot. At the time the mine ceased
operations, the native channel of the Pond 5 watershed was being prepared for underdrain
installation. Fill 5 was planned to occupy the majority of the ephemeral drainage between the
mined area and Pond 5, which is situated at the mouth of the canyon as it meets Cow
3
