(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-1982-189
INSPECTION DATE: 1/13/10 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: -F.CS
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine monitoring inspection for the Hornung Pit, a Kit Carson County 110c sand and gravel
permit, conducted by Eric Scott of DRMS. DRMS traveled with Kit Carson Road and Bridge representative
Walt Isenbart to the site, and observed the site with him at approximately 1430. The permit sign was present
but in rather poor condition with some missing letters/numbers, and should be repaired. There were no permit
boundary markers present. The sign will need to be repaired and appropriate permit boundary markers places to
define the extent of the permit area.
Kit Carson County currently has 3 acres permitted at this location, however due to a misunderstanding the site
was mined as if it were a full 9.9 acres. Because the extent of the disturbance clearly is over the 3 acre
permitted area, this is a violation of the existing permit. A complete amendment to the permit to expand the
affected area from 3 to 9.9 acres must be submitted to the Division by March 30, 2010 to avoid possible
enforcement actions by the Mined Land Reclamation Board. If the disturbed area is greater than 9.9 acres the
county will need to convert this site to a 112c permit. Because the disturbance is located well away from any
other structures or features, and no other modifications to the permit should be required, the amendment process
should be relatively simple.
No other issues were observed during this inspection.
Photo 1- representative photo of Hornung Pit taken looking southeast from the pit entrance.
