The Whirlwind Mine water
treatment plant is located at 30100 5110 Road, Gateway, Colorado 81522. Discharge of
treated water from the Whirlwind Mine is allowed in accordance with Colorado
Discharge Permit System (CDPS) permit number CO-0047562.
On November 24, 2008 the Whirlwind Mine was put on stand-by status. Through
December 2009, the mine has been dewatered and mine water treated and discharged as
necessary to comply with CDPS permit conditions. Mine water collects in the mine at a
slow rate (approximately 2 to 3 gpm) and has been pumped into the untreated water tank
and treated in batch runs, as necessary. One batch run occurred from December 1 to 5,
2009. A monthly discharge sample was collected on December 2, 2009 in accordance
with the aforementioned permit. Analytical sample results indicate that there were no
exceedances of the effluent limitations during the December 2009 batch run discharge or
the quarterly WET test, sampled for on December 2 to 4, 2009.
As of December 9, 2009 Energy Fuels has suspended dewatering of the mine and will let
the mine water accumulate within the mine workings. Energy Fuels will not be treating
or discharging any mine water during the period that mine water is not pumped from the
mine. This decision will be reevaluated in mid-2010.
Dissolved iron, sulfate, and nitrate levels are being monitored in the discharge samples at
the request of WQCD and the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety. Dissolved
iron in the discharge sample was detected at 0.06 mg/L, sulfate was detected at 95 mg/L,
and nitrate was detected at 0.8 mg/L.
Energy Fuels, Inc. 44 Union Blvd., Suite 600
www.energyfuels.corn Lakewood, Colorado 80228
Phone: 303-974-2140
Fax: 303-974-2141
