Response to DRMS Comments
Environmental Protection Plan,
Denison Van 4 Mine
roadside ditch in the County Right of Way (north) that route off-site run
off around the Mine site. The County will maintain the ditch to the north
of the property; however, improvements to this drainage currently need
to be made. The remaining drainage channels are existing and have been
sized based on the 100-year, 24-hour storm. These facilities are also
shown on Figure 16-1. They are existing, stable facilities that are not
currently in need of any site improvements.
The one small drainage maintenance item that needs to be completed is to
enlarge a ditch adjacent to the County access road; however, this ditch is
only needed to capture a 100-year, 24 hour storm event. As ore is not
currently stored on the site, Denison proposes to complete this drainage
improvement prior to the resumption of mining activities at the mine site.
All other drainage channels that are not currently existing facilities will
be removed at reclamation.
Comment 6 Water quality monitoring. Section 11.0 states that here has not been
groundwater encountered in the Van 4 Mine during past underground activity,
and monitoring wells are therefore unnecessary at this time. This situation could
change, since caving has made the workings inaccessible and the former dry
conditions maybe found different in the future. The Division agrees with
Denison that if groundwater is found in the mine in the future, then Denison must
notify the Division to discuss a monitoring program.
Surface water is presently monitored under the CDPS permit, and the Division
finds that to be adequate currently.
Response Concur. Denison will contact DBMS if, during future underground
operations, water is observed in the mine.
Comment 7 Reclamation plan. The currently-approved reclamation plan was made part of
this permit prior to the submittal of the EPP. Its full details are not part of the
EPP, but the plan is incorporated by reference. However, the most recent
iteration of the reclamation map if found in the Figures section, as Figure 16-1.
The map shows existing topographic contours and reclamation contours, plus
reclamation (i.e., permanent) water bars. Portions of several reclamation
contours as well as at least one water bar are depicted outside the permitted area
boundary. This post-mining representation may have been inadvertent, but the
operator is reminded that affecting areas outside the permitted boundary is not
approved and must be avoided. The operator should either submit a revised
reclamation map or a statement clarifying that all reclamation will be contained
within the boundary.
Response The depiction of the reclamation features outside of the permitted
boundary was inadvertent. Reclamation will be contained within the
permitted boundary.
DRMS RTC Van4 Mine EPP.doc
