INSPECTION REPORT 'Site: National King Coal Mine, Hesperus, Colorado <br />Inspected By: Don R. May, P.E., Project Engineer <br />S <br />Inspection Date: Quarterly Inspection, December 26, 2009 <br />Deep snow covered all areas of the mine that are not routinely plowed for vehicle <br />access. This limited the ability to accurately inspect surface features. <br />Ponds: The east and west sedimentation ponds and their embankments and outlets <br />appear in good condition although snow cover makes this assessment questionable. <br />The west pond is shown in photograph 1. <br />Drainage Ditches- The upper and lower yards are all in good shape. Photograph 2 and <br />3 show the yard area. Although partially covered with snow, drainage grates, pipes and <br />ditches appeared clear and functioning. All other ditches and drainage structures were <br />inspected and appear in good operating condition. There are no apparent drainage <br />problems on the site. Except where noted, all drainage features have been constructed <br />and are operating as stated in the drainage plan submitted to the Division of Minerals <br />and Geology. <br />Coal Waste Pile: Photo 4 shows the top of the waste pile. As seen, waste rock has been <br />dumped on a portion of the surface, but not graded. Due to the snow cover it was not <br />possible to determine if the apparent problem with the adverse slope of the side <br />drainage ditch, mentioned in the last report, has been rectified. The face of the waste <br />pile, although snow covered, appears stable and in good condition. There are no visible <br />signs of structural instability on the waste pile. <br />Except for the items mentioned above the fill on the waste pile has been constructed as <br />specified in the design approved by the Division of Minerals and Geology.
