Project: Gold Hill Mill LSR No: 88090117
Case Comments
Digestion Methods:
Certificate of Analysis
The extracts were digested for total recoverable metals analysis using EPA Region 8 laboratory SOP 102, "Open
Beaker Digestion," consistent with EPA method 200.2, "Sample Preparation Procedure for Spectrochemical
Determination of Total Recoverable Elements," revision 2.8 from the manual Methods for the Determination of Metals
in Environmental Samples, supplement 1, EPA/600/R-94/111, May 1994. The samples for total mercury were digested
using EPA Region 8 laboratory SOP 203, "Determination of Mercury Using the Perkin Elmer FIMS Analyzer," and
EPA method 7470A (manual cold vapor atomic absorption).
Analytical Methods:
SPLP samples for total recoverable metals analysis by ICP-OES were analyzed using EPA Region 8 laboratory SOP
210, "Determination of Elements Using the Optima 5300 DV ICP," and EPA method 200.7, "Determination of Metals
and Trace Elements in Water and Wastes by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry," from the
manual Methods for the Determination of Metals in Environmental Samples, supplement 1, EPA/600/R-94/111, May
1994. Samples for total recoverable metals analysis by ICP-MS were analyzed using EPA Region 8 laboratory SOP
201, "Determination of Trace Elements by ICP-MS Using Method 200.8," and EPA method 200.8, "Determination of
Trace Metals in Water and Wastes by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry," from the manual Methods for
the Determination of Metals in Environmental Samples, supplement 1, rev. 5.4, EPA/600/R-94/111, May 1994. The
samples for total mercury were analyzed using EPA Region 8 laboratory SOP 203 and EPA method 7470A.
Quality Control Notes:
Routine sample quality control results such as matrix spikes and laboratory duplicates are reported on the quality
control pages of this report. Certain of the reported QC criteria may not be applicable. For example, duplicate analysis
RPD does not apply if the sample result is less than five times the reporting limit. Matrix spike control limits do not
apply if the sample concentration is four times the amount of spike added. Serial dilution analysis RPD does not apply
if the original sample concentration is less than 50 times the reporting limit. QC results that meet these criteria may be
reported on the QC summary page but should not be evaluated. Applicable QC results not within control limits are
discussed in the analyst notes section. Instrument quality control results, such as continuing calibration verification
(CCV), continuing calibration blanks (CCB), initial calibration verification (ICV), initial calibration blank (ICB), and
instrument blanks (IBL), were within QC criteria unless stated in the analyst notes section.
Analyst Notes:
SPLP by ICP-OES: Barium contamination was found in the digested blank at a level of 0.06 mg/kg (>RL). Barium
results were flagged "J" as estimated for both samples. Strontium contamination was found in the digested blank at a
level of 0.004 mg/L (>RL). No data were flagged as the sample contained strontium at a level greater than ten times
the level of contamination. The standard reference material (SRM) failed low and out of control for silver. Both silver
results were flagged "J" as estimated. The SPLP extracts were analyzed for mercury outside the 28 day holding time
fo mercury. The SPLP extract mercury analyses were flagged "Y as estimated. No other difficulties or unusual
circumstances were encountered during these analyses.
8907007 FINAL 09 04 09 1617 Page 3 of 16 Print Date : 04-Sep-2009
