August 2002 -27- 003 -2203
second layer of geogrid was installed transverse to the first. Six inches of SSF was then
placed and compacted.
4.2.2 Underdrains
Golder verified that the underdrains were constructed as specified, that Ames placed OF a
minimum of 3 feet deep and 5 feet wide in the Primary Underdrain, and 2 feet deep and 4 feet
wide in the Secondary Underdrains. Golder verified that Ames removed oversi7e and
unsuitable material from the UF. Golder verified that Ames installed geotextile in the
underdrains and placed a minimum of 6 inches of SSF on the top of the geotextile.
4.2.3 Leak Detection Trench
Golder verified that the Phase 1Va LDT was a minimum of 1 foot wide by 1 foot deep, and
that LDF, geomembrane, geotextile and pipe were installed as specified. Golder also verified
that Phase Na LDS was constructed per the design shown on Construction Drawing 14.
4.2.4 Subgrade PrepMation
Golder monitored subgrade preparation, including verification that Ames compacted the
subgrade with a smooth drum vibratory compactor. Golder verified that Ames removed
protruding rocks from the subgrade surface prior to SLF placement. Golder verified that the
subgrade surface was moisture conditioned, smooth, and unyielding prior to SLF placement.
4.2.5 Site Grading
Golder monitored site grading. Due to the gradation of the SF used for site grading, the
compaction of the fill could not be tested with a nuclear density gauge (that is, the fill had
greater than 30 percent by weight larger than three - quarter inch particle size). Golder verified
that the maximum particle size of the fill did not exceed 24 inches, and that lifts were no
thicker than one and one -half times the maximum particle size.
