1.0 INTRODUCTION
The Stroh Pit mine plan includes two mining areas, the west pit and the east pit.
The west pit is approximately 35 acres and the east pit is 15 acres. The project
will mine gravel below the natural water table by utilizing conventional dry mining
techniques. Dry mining within each pit will be achieved by construction a
dewatering trench around the toe of the excavation slope. The trench is then
pumped to a sediment pond. The sediment pond is designed as a water quality
feature which will allow sediment to settle out of suspension before water is
allowed to gravity drain to the river.
In the west pit, the reclamation plan will leave a 28.4 acre lake and a portion of
backfilled land south of the lake. In the east pit, the reclamation plan will leave a
10.5 acre lake and a portion of backfilled land southwest of the lake.
The reclamation plan will not construct a hydraulic barrier or earthen liner to
prevent the inflow of groundwater to the reclaimed pits. Instead, groundwater will
be allowed to flow freely into reclaimed the pits or lakes.
This analysis will look at the existing local groundwater system, the effects of
dewatering during mining on the local water table and finally, the effects of the
reclamation lakes on the local water table.
Stroh Pit
Groundwater Analysis Report
1 of 8
