Sherman
Executive Director
Bill Ritter, Jr.
Governor
Ronald W. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
The Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety has received a revision for the Bowie No. 2 Mine.
Attached is a copy of the pertinent sections of the revision submittal. The revision was called complete
on December 22, 2009. The decision due date is February 20, 2010.
In Technical Revision No. 66, Bowie Resources LLC is proposing to construct a ventilation shaft for the
Bowie No. 2 Mine just west of Terror Creek. The proposed site is about 1.3 miles south of where the
USDA-Forest Service boundary crosses the Terror Creek Road, at a previously approved and disturbed
exploration drill hole site. The activities proposed in this revision will add 0.5 acres of new disturbance to
the already disturbed 0.5 acres. The surface is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and leased to
Bowie Resources LLC under Federal Coal Lease COC-61209.
The ventilation shaft will be about 690 feet deep and have a finished diameter of 18.5 feet. The shaft will
be bored from the bottom up so that the cuttings will remain underground. In order to minimize water
infiltration, the shaft perimeter will be grouted before boring begins. In addition, the shaft lining will be
grouted with shotcrete. An escape hoist and a nitrogen generation system, powered from within the mine,
will be installed at the shaft site. No ventilation fan is planned at this time. The shaft and surface
disturbances will be bonded for reclamation.
The site is located in the SWASEA of Section 5, Township 13 South, Range 91 West. Access to the site
will be from Steven's Gulch Road, then south on Terror Creek Road. The proposed site is located about
350 feet horizontally and 170 feet vertically from Terror Creek. The proposed site is less than 100 feet
horizontally from the Terror Creek Road outside right-of-way so a public hearing can be requested to
determine if the proposed project will protect the interests of the public and affected landowners.
This revision is available for review at the Paonia Public Library, 2 Third Avenue, Paonia, CO 81428.
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
