The following changes in the Western Fuels NuclaTermit Revision 2009 need to be made:
- Page 2.05.4(2)(e)-3 (first paragraph), "O.T' share of CC-Ditch water, is needed per acre
of irrigated land using a sideroll sprinkler, which converts to "IX' acres irrigated land
per share of water. These values replace 0.832 shares and 1.2 acres, respectively, in the
text.
- Pages 2.05.4(2)(e)-5 and 2.05.4(2)(e)-26, value needs to be changed from 60.10 acres of
land to "71" acres.
- Attachment 2.05.4(2)(e)-7-5, 0.29 inches per day needs to replaced with "0.25" inches
per day, frequency of 12 days needs to be replaced with "13" days, 720 feet needs to be
replaced with "780" feet, and 21.8 acres needs to be replaced with "23.6" acres.
- Attachment 2.05.4(2)(e)-7-6, In calculation, 12 days needs to be replaced with "13"
days, and field Spacing of 720 feet needs to be replaced with "780" feet.
Other agronomic recommendations are as follows:
Page 2.05.4(2)(e)-18 (first paragraph), When planting alfalfa, it is accepted farming
practice to plant a companion crop of oats, or other small grain, with the alfalfa The
companion crop serves multiple fimctions when planted at the appropriate rate,
approximately 20-301bs/acre: Primarily, it provides some shade and reduces exposure to
wind for the germinating alfalfa plants. The key is to use a low seeding rate for the
companion crop so that it doesn't provide competition to the alfalfa for water and
nutrients.
- Page 2.05.4(2)(e)-25, Medicago (alfalfa) does well on coarse textured, well drained soils.
- Page 2.05.4(2)(e)-30, To get a good comparison between the proposed reference area and
reclaimed areas, the alfalfa crops need to be at a similar growth stage in both areas. For
example, the third through fifth years of growth after germination of the alfalfa crop, are
typically the most productive. One would not want to compare a first year crop with a
fifth year crop.
- Page 2.05.4(2)(e)-37, The comments in bullet 4) are very debatable. The CC-Ditch has
generally improved their delivery of irrigation water, in both quantity and timing, in the
past decade or two, in spite of a few years of drought conditions.
Page 2.05.4(2)(e)-57, The NRCS recommended dates for dryland seeding of cool season
species in the Nucla area are:
o July 15 - September 15
o October 25 - April 30 (Dormant Winter Seeding)
If you have any questions or need further clarification of NRCS recommendation regarding these
matters please contact me.
Jim Boyd, NRCS Resource Conservationist
cc.
