2 . 05 . 4 ( 2 ) ( e )
Sample adequacy requirements for cover data is
calculated using the formula;
nmin = ( s2t2 ) /(dx) 2
where nmin = the minimum adequate number of cover transects
s2 = sample variance (absolute cover)
t = a designated t-statistic ( two-tailed test with
90 percent confidence)
d = desired limits of detection (0. 1 or 10 percent )
x = sample mean (absolute percent cover)
Collection and Analysis of Woody Pant Density
Data on shrubs is recorded at the randomly located
vegetation cover sample sites. Shrub densities are tallied from
a 50 meter by 1 meter quadrat constructed along the axis of the
cover transect . The number of shrubs within the quadrat is
determined by species . Individual stems are counted for all
shrubs .
Sample adequacy for woody plant density is calcu-
lated using the formula as presented above ( for cover ) except
that mean density and variance were substituted for mean cover
and variance.
Collection and Analysis of Production Data
Rectangular plots 1 meter by 1 meter are used for
production estimates . The current year' s growth of all herba-
ceous plants is clipped. Herbaceous vegetation is sorted into
the following categories ; annual grasses , perennial grasses ,
annual forbs and perennial forbs. Each production plot ,yields
one sample.
In the laboratory, clippings are oven-dried at
1050C for 24 hours and is weighed to the nearest tenth of a gram.
Data are recorded as grams per square meter (g/m2 ) . The produc-
tion estimates are also converted to pounds per acre ( lbs/Ac ) .
Statistical adequacy requirements for production
are calculated using the formula in section 2 . 9 . 1 , except that
mean production and variance were used in place of mean cover and
variance.
•' 2. 05-27 July 1991
