New Horizon Mine #2 Technical Revision 59
Surface water sampling at New Horizon #2 takes place at two points each along Tuttle
and Calamity Draws. These points are intended to be upstream and downstream
sample points. For Tuttle, these are SW-N1 (upstream) and SW-N3 (downstream) for
pre-mine and current conditions. Calamity draw was sampled upstream of the mine at
SW-N108 and downstream at SW-N109 since 2001. The sampling to this point has
been on an at least quarterly basis for Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and monthly for pH.
This technical revision of the New Horizon #2 Mine permit, is to allow the sampling of
surface water from an upstream and downstream location of both Calamity and Tuttle
draws semi-annually. Map 2.04.7-1A shows the sample points. Data consistency of data
from each draw will be shown to justify the lowering of sample frequency.
Calamity Draw
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and pH are the water properties of concern for the New
Horizon #2 mine, and form the basis of sampling comparison. On Calamity Draw,
sampling has taken place at two locations from 2001 to 2008. The upstream sample
point, SW-N108, is located well above any drainage that carries surface water from the
disturbed areas into Calamity Draw. This is compared to sample point SW-N109,
located immediately downstream from the Pond 007 discharge on Calamity Draw.
Figure 1 shows the pH of the two points, and Figure 2 shows the TDS versus flow for
the two points.
