RE: Ground Clearance Reconnaissance for Lupinus crassus,
Lillylands Coal Comany
In response to a recommendation in your letter of April 8, 1988, I accompanied
Dave Andrews of Lillylands Coal Company on a reconnaissance survey of the
subject coal lease area near Naturita, Colorado. The survey was conducted on
May 10, 1988. No Payson lupine (Lupinus crassus) plants were observed, and it
is considered unlikely that the species occurs wiiitin the lease area.
Prior to conducting the around search, ? met vr,th Jim Ferguson of the BEM in
Mon=~osE. ,'im proviDed location info-mation on several known populations of
Paysor, luoine in addition to those already provided by your office. I visited
four of the sites to familiarize myself with the plant and its habitat. The
populations I observed occurred on loose, sparsely vegetated hillslopes and
along dry washes within open stands of juniper. Widely spaced big sagebrush
(Artemisia tridentata), galleta (Hilaria jamesii) and prickly pear (Opuntia )
were common associates. Soils were son yTor clay looms formed rom
mancos shale, typically with a thin veneer of colluvial cobbles. The
populations occurred at elevations ranging from 5,500 to 6,000 feet. The
plants were in bloom at the time of mY visit.
The Lillylands Coal lease area is located to the south of State Highway 145,
southeast of Naturita, within portions of Sections 28, 29, 32, 33, 34 and 35
of T46N, R15W and portions of Sections 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15 and 16
of T45N, R15W.

Topographically, the site could be described as a gently sloping plateau
dissected by several widely spaced steep sided drainages. Elevations range
from 5,700 feet along the southern border of the tract to 6,300 feet along the
northern boundary. Geologic strata exposed are predaninantly sandstones and
soil types are sandy looms on the plateau and sandy looms and rock outcrops on
