,,
GENERAL ROOF SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. This is the Roof Control Plan which will be suitable to the prevailing geological conditions during
development and longwall mining.
2. Persons shall be protected from falling material at drift openings by steel arch plate or by steel arches set
on not more than 4 ft. centers with no less than 4" x 4" wood lagging installed between the arches. The
arch structure shall be of sufficient size to prevent falling or rolling debris from entering the drift opening.
The arch structure may be replaced with a concrete structure. No mining within 150 ft. of a seam outcrop
is planned.
3. Where mobile equipment may operate, all crossbars or beams shall be installed with some means of
support that will prevent the beam or crossbar from falling in the event the supporting legs are
accidentally dislodged.
4. Supplemental supports such as cribs and posts shall be installed tight and on solid footing.
5. Tunnel liners and arches used as primary support shall be installed in accordance with manufacturer's
recommendations and a Roof Control Plan addendum submitted to MSHA for approval prior to installation.
6. When subnormal roof conditions are encountered, indicated, or anticipated, the roof support shall be
supplemented with additional support materials in order to maintain the purpose for which the entries
were intended.
7. When adverse roof conditions are encountered, the depth of cut will be reduced. When conditions
improve, at least one 20-foot cut will be taken in good roof and the roof evaluated by a mine official before
extended cuts are resumed.
8. Miners will be positioned in a manner that they cannot be struck by temporary tensioned cables, wire
ropes, chains, or slings that break or slip. All rigging will be maintained in good condition. All slings and
rigging will be utilized in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and will incorporate adequate
safety factor above their rated capacities for anticipated loads. Hand-held tools or mobile equipment
provisions that are designed and utilized for that purpose which requires close proximity of the employee
will not be regulated by this provision.
9. Where necessary, supplemental supports such as rib mesh, timber or equivalent, or a combination will be
provided at refuge alternative locations. *- rpCr Roof' ;V/ _ L ?.s S',?PoXr-fZ /.v A ccc2bAn/Cls
W !ice! r74 e- A PP20Ve-a ROOF eo.vT72-04.
