Sherman
Executive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
The Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety hereby issues notice, in accordance with Title 34, Article 33,
Section 116, Paragraph 4, of the Colorado Revised Statutes, that on December 11, 2009, an application to revise
coal mining operations at the Bowie No. 2 Mine was considered complete for the purposes of filing. The revision
was submitted by Bowie Resources, LLC. All review and comment periods as provided in the Act and the
Regulations initiate from this date of filing.
In Technical Revision No. 65, Bowie Resources LLC (BRL) is proposing to amend its B-Seam mine plan and also
drill one geotechnical hole. Due to adverse mining conditions in the north, BRL is proposing to curtail mining and
related surface disturbance operations in the north and construct mains to the west to connect the current Bowie
No. 2 Mine workings with future longwall mining further to the west.
The mains will pass underneath Terror Creek and underneath the Western Area Power Administration
transmission line, between two of the transmission line's towers. The mains are designed to prevent subsidence
underneath Terror Creek and the two transmission line towers. BRL is also proposing to room and pillar mine in
an area that lies to the north of the current mains and just east of Terror Creek. Finally, BRL is proposing to drill a
geotechnical hole for a future vent shaft on the west side of Terror Creek. The coal to be mined and the surface to
be disturbed are managed by the Bureau of Land Management. BRL's right to enter is under Federal Coal Lease
COC-61209. All proposed mining and surface disturbances are within the current permit area. No increase in coal
production or water usage at the mine is proposed in this revision.
The underground coal mining operation is on land located approximately 5 miles Northeast of Paonia, Colorado.
The permit area is further described as follows:
Portions of Sections 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, and 22, Township 13 South, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M.
Portions of Sections 33 and 34, Township 12 South, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M.
The above-mentioned tracts of land are shown on USGS 7.5 minute Quadrangle map of Bowie.
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
