III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
Slides & Damage
• No evidence of slides or damage was observed on or adjacent to the reclaimed slopes of
the East Mine (Photos 5 and 6).
Excess Spoil & Development Waste
• The West Ridge Coal Refuse Disposal Area has substantial vegetative cover and appears to
be entirely stabilized (Photo 7). The northern end of the pile was disturbed in 2008 in order to
receive approximately 50,000 cubic yards of coal refuse hauled from the Run-Of-Mine
stockpile at the Timber Storage Area. Coverfill and topsoil were replaced during the some
year, and the disturbed area was seeded. Vegetation is not yet well established, but the
surface is stable and no signs of erosion were observed (Photo 8).
Bowie No. 1 Mine C-1981-038 18-Nov-2008
-3-
