Because rock mass response to loading is influenced by fracture properties, Bowie
dedicated significant resources for logging structure and collecting supplementary data
for determining as much quantitative data as possible concerning the following ten
fracture parameters:
1. Orientation
2. Number of sets
3. Spacing
4. Persistence
5. Roughness
6. Wall strength
7. Aperture
8. Filling
9. Seepage
10. Block size
L-1
These ten fracture properties are routinely used in geomechanics for classifying rock
mass quality and thus were examined along geotechnical coreholes. Results were used to
calculate other important rock mass indices, including the Rock Quality Designation
(RQD). RQD is the sum of all core pieces greater than four inches, divided by the total
interval length. Like core recovery, RQD was calculated on a per-run basis for each
drilling interval.
BRL obtained the following geophysical logs. These measurements were completed
using the ISRM procedures:
• Electrical resistivity
• Radiation logs including both gamma ray and gamma-gamma density
• Miscellaneous logs including caliper and temperature.
• Sonic properties
so
Maleki Technologies, Inc.
