resource degradation is not expected to be a problem. However should staining be necessary, it will be
done as part of the contemporaneous reclamation for that harvesting area. As an example if an area is
identified as needing staining in Year 3 but harvesting continues in that area for several more years, then
staining will be done when that area is reclaimed after harvesting is completed area. If any temporary
harvesting road requires staining, then staining will be done as part of contemporaneous reclamation when
that road is no longer needed for harvesting. The operator proposes these alternate solutions to darken the
lighter rock before staining.
1. Cover the light areas with dark surface rock from stockpiles of unusable material or
another screened area.
2. Use manufactured stained rocks from one of Gallegos's other operations.
3. Leave surface rock viewable from the KOPs undisturbed except for a temporary harvesting
road in the initial harvesting area on USFS lands.
These alternatives are preferred over staining since natural materials are used and no chemicals need to be
brought onto the site.
The existing disturbance on private lands is excluded from the EA as the USFS has no jurisdiction on
private lands.
Revised: 12/2/09
