Spring 2009 Subsidence and Geologic Field Observations
Box Canyon, Apache. Rocks, and South of Divide Mining Areas
• and soil are sloughing and falling toward and over the sandstone outcrop directly beneath the
reclaimed pad. An additional photograph of this area from a different vantage point can be found
in Section 5.6.2.
• Figure 10. Eastward view of Location 6 showing the downslope movement of surface vegetation,
soil and colluviums toward and over a sandstone outcrop beneath the reclaimed MDW pad.
5.2 Traverse B -B'
Traverse B -B' begins at a point along Sylvester Gulch Road (along Traverse A -A') at the mouth
of the first east side canyon of Sylvester Gulch and continues southward, then southeastward, to
the head of the valley where it intercepts the main West Flatiron access road (part of Traverse C-
C') above mined Longwall Panel 16. B' is located approximately 800 feet west of the area known
as Twin Ponds (Ponds P27 -2 and P27 -3) as shown on Map 1.
This traverse is located mostly above portions of the B -seam coal that have not been, and will not
be, mined. The traverse, however, is located in the area of mining influence of various
previously -mined longwall panels. Exceptions include a short segment (about 1,500 feet)
starting at B which is above mined Longwall Panel 25 and the last segment (about 3,500 feet)
near B', which is over the Box Canyon mains and western ends of mined Longwall Panels 15 and
16. Overburden depth to the B -seam varies from about 450 feet at B and gradually increases to
• approximately 1,050 feet at B'.
tf31- u32J91 Wright Water Engineers
November 2009
