i
southern reclaim limit. The dragline finished re-grade of the 2009 West Pit reclaim area in
late August.
After final grading of the area was complete, approximately 1500 feet of the rock lined
Taylor Tributary Ditch was constructed in the valley bottom of the draw using a track hoe
and D6 dozer to shape previously tail dumped piles of competent material into a ditch (see
photos # 3 and # 4). After the ditch was built, two scrapers along with various dozers
spread an average of 8 inches of topsoil over the regraded acreage (see photo # 5). A
John Deere tractor pulling a seed drill and broadcaster drill-seeded most areas of the
reclaim with the exception of some areas, which were deemed too steep to reach by
machine. These areas were subsequently hand seeded using broadcasters. After seeding
was complete, the acreage was ripped on contour using a D6 dozer and contour furrows
were put in place to minimize erosion and increase stability of the newly reclaimed area.
Please see photos # 6 and # 7 which depicts the completed 2009 West Pit Reclamation
Area.
The 2009 East Pit Reclamation posed different challenges for Colowyo due to the fact that
portions of two final rock ditches needed to be constructed in comparison to the West Pit's
single ditch. Colowyo solved this dilemma by working its way from east to west
concurrently constructing the rock-lined ditches along with final re-grade and topsoil lay
down.
Various dozers were utilized to grade the entire area to final PMT in August of 2009 (see
photo # 8). Once the area was graded to final PMT, various 170 ton haul trucks hauled and
dumped topsoil along the western reclamation border as well as into planned locations
throughout the regraded area (see photos # 9 and # 10). The two east pit rock lined
ditches were constructed in the same method as in the west pit see (photo # 11). Scrapers
were used to move the large haul truck topsoil piles into smaller piles throughout the
regraded area where dozers were then able to spread topsoil over the entire regraded
region (see photo # 12). The same John Deere tractor used in the West Pit dill seeded the
complete expanse of the final reclamation in the East Pit (see photo # 13). Please see
photo # 14 for the completed East Pit Reclamation Area.
n conclusion, Colowyo safely and successfully completed 83.3 acres of reclamation for
'.009. This acreage eclipsed the originally submitted acreage number of 77. This particular
eclamation required enormous efforts and cooperation from both machinery and the entire
,olowyo workforce. Special recognition goes to the 102 dragline as it moved the vast
najority of regrade spoil material in the West Pit with only minor assistance from a few
lozers in touching up the area. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the 2009
Reclamation efforts is that they were performed without a single accident.
ie deliberate, positive, and safe approach to the reclamation of mined lands at the
>lowyo Coal Mine is an exemplary example of its commitment to the goals and objectives
the Colorado Surface Coal Mining Reclamation Act.
