United Companies
Weed Management Program
Gunnison and Crested Butte Area
x.01; vec/
NOV2O
ouran?o 09
omi-
on of om,
., g
'
84r?z 14
'W -400
Weed control is an important aspect of United Companies facility maintenance and we are
committed to controlling noxious weeds. According to State law (CRS 35-5.5, the Colorado Weed
Management Act), noxious weeds must be managed. Integrated Weed Management is a strategy that
has been suggested as the structure for control programs. Elements of this approach include:
-:Preventing the encroachment of noxious weed species into un-infested areas
-.Detecting and eradicating new weed species
-Containing large-scale infestations
-Controlling large-scale infestations using an integrated approach
-Revegetation
United utilizes active measures to control noxious weed species. This plan applies to the following
United locations in Gunnison and Crested Butte:
Seahorse Ranch West Gravel Pit - DRMS Permit No. M-2001-113
Gunnison West Ready Mix Pit - DRMS Permit No. M-1977-023
Gunnison East Vader Pit - DRMS Permit No. M-1978-287
Rozman Pit- DRMS Permit No. M-1981-014
The noxious forb species observed on the properties include mayweed and scentless chamomile and
canada thistle. It is also expected to find a few small populations of oxeye daisy and yellow toadflax
at the Crested Butte pit. The percent cover of these species are light to moderate in density with a few
exceptions on the dense side.
Many of the species in this area are difficult to control and there are very small windows for proper
treatment. United will be proactive in weed management thus resulting in better control with longer
lasting effects.
Proposed treatment Schedule/ methods for weeds:
United will utilize a competent and qualified weed control specialist who will treat noxious weeds
with appropriate herbicides in three stages during the growing season. The first treatment will target
the chamomile complex, and canada thistle as soon as the plants begin to grow about mid to late
May. The mid summer treatment (late June to early July) will concentrate on any newly emerging
chamomile, canada thistle, and oxeye daisy. The final treatment will occur September to October
which will concentrate on all species but the emphasis will be on the creeping perennials yellow
toadflax and canada thistle. The herbicides proposed include the use of aquatic approved 2,4-D,
