2-38
2.3.1 Topsoil Availability
The availability of topsoil materials associated with disturbances within the permit
area has been assessed as part of the baseline soil survey program and reported in
Section 4.4.4. Two types of topsoil will be salvaged from the areas to be disturbed.
Rivra Gravely Sandy Loam Variant will be salvaged to a depth of 12 inches at the Coal
Mine Waste Pile and Material Storage area, while 24 inches of Glendive Sandy Loam
will be salvaged from the office area, Construction Material Stockpile, and Sediment
Pond Area. The types of soil in the permit area and salvage depths in the disturbed
areas are shown in Figures 4.4-1 and 2.2-2, respectively.
Approximately 900 cu. yards of topsoil will be salvaged from the Coal Mine
Waste Pile and 11,000 cu. yards from the office complex, Construction Material
Stockpile and Sediment Pond area and existing topsoil pile. The soil to be salvaged will
be Glendive Sandy Loam and Rivra Gravely Sandy Loam with 11,000 cubic yards and
900 cubic yards respectively. This topsoil will be stored in the McClane Canyon topsoil
stockpile. The Operator assumed the topsoil in the existing pile (prior to TR-16) was
salvaged from the sediment pond and sediment drying areas, which is where the new
material storage area and Coal Mine Waste Pile will reside and therefore, no new
topsoil in those two areas was accounted for in those two areas.
2.3.2 Topsoil Removal
Vegetation and topsoil will be removed from any area that will be disturbed
(access/haul road extensions, additional facilities areas and the sedimentation pond)
when suitable topsoil exists in recoverable thicknesses. Removal will be by front end
loaders or some other equipment adequate to differentially segregate suitable topsoil
material from unsuitable soil to the depth indicated on Figure 2.2-2.
• TR-16 M`-Volume 1 (Rev 05/08)
