2-17
11 feet thick, the interval mined will normally be in the upper portion of the seam.
Deviation from this plan will only be done after consolation with and approval from the
BLM. One possible exception to mining top coal may be bottom mining in thick seam
areas where safety considerations make pillar recovery impossible. The competency of
both the roof and the coal must be adequate to maintain the entry configuration while
mining is occurring. In seam heights less than 11 feet, full seam thickness will be
mined where conditions permit.
2.1.6.3 Bum Exclusion Zones
In those areas where burned coal is known to exist at the outcrop, a 500-foot bum
•J
exclusion zone will be adopted. The use of this zone is to ensure that no active bum
areas will be intersected with the mine workings. Active bum is known to exist in
portions of the Bookcliffs coal field. Specific areas of active bum within the mine plan
area have not been identified.
Based upon evidence that no active burn exists, specific areas of the mine may
~~
mine closer to the outcrop. Reserve estimates contained within this plan consistently
exclude the bum zone, but as can be seen on Figure 2.1-1, panels have been designed
to allow mining this are if conditions permit. The decision to mine closer will be made
on a panel by panel basis.
M`Clane
Volume 1
03/06
