Mr. Roy Kam
Sextca Coa! Compaxy
January 12, 2008
Page 2
•
The embankments have been constructed from spoil material produced during mining. This
material was placed in controlled lifts and compacted. Based on this fact, observations of the on-
site spoil piles, and typical strength values for spoil material, the following strength properties were
assigned to the embankment.
• Spoil: ~ = 38°, cohesion = 0 psi
• Unit Weight: 120 pcf
Conclusions and Recommendations
Based on the above stated assumptions, safety factor of 1.56 was calculated by the limit
equilibrium analysis. Rule 4.05.9(8)(b) states that the stockponds require a safety factor of 1.3.
Therefore, these structures should perform adequately during the life of mine. Tn addition, there
are no downstream hazards of these stock ponds; therefore, if a failure did occur, there is minimal
risk to life and property.
We appreciate this opportunity to work once again with SCC. Please contact the undersigned if
you have any questions about this report.
Sincerely,
N11~1f-I
-~a/Qi~.
John Pellicer, P.E.
Principal
Attachments
cc: Jay James
e~
