In our site observations of the quarry in September we noticed gross movements at the
upper scarp above the northern block that simultaneously slipped on September 13`h. Visually,
this movement has developed the previous tension crack (noted last December) into a well-
developed scarp above the north portion of the quarry wall (See Figure 4). We have not seen
the movement data from prisms 20 through 30 in that general area.
Recommendations
The recent movements of the quarry rockslide have not changed any of the original
recommendations and observations that CGS made in our earlier reports. In light of this new
failure, we offer the following additional observations and recommendations for your
consideration.
Figure 4. New scarp development at apex of rockslide within reddish colored weathered, fractured
Precambrian Pikes Peak Granite. Red dashed area shows scarp movement that extended northward
from location shown in Figure 2. Northward, scarp is hidden by large bench in northern block. Black
arrow shows location of inset photo taken from the bench in December 2008 when the scarp was
just a tension crack. Note person in photo for scale.
