Operation Methods
Once topsoil is stripped using dozers, loaders, scrapers and trucks, overburden is then stripped
using the same equipment. The gravel is then pushed down a slope using a dozer to a front end
loader. The loader takes the gravel to the processing equipment. The fines that are removed by
the screening operation are taken to the stockpiles and also to the valley fills.
As shown on Map C-2B, the 2009 amendment permit area is divided into four Mining Areas.
Mining Area #1 is basically the northern portion of the permit before the 2009 Amendment Area.
Mining Area #2 is primarily the southern portion of the permit before the 2009 Amendment.
Mining Area #2 contains a small portion of the Stephenson property at the request of the land
owner for aesthetic reasons. Mining Area #3 is the northern portion of the additional area as part
of the 2009 Amendment and Mining Area #4 is the southern portion of the additional area. The
remainder of Mining Area 1 will be mined first because this is the area with the largest amount
of backfill needed. Mining Area 3 will then be mined because it also needs a large amount of
backfill to become a center pivot irrigated pasture. The remainder of Mining Area 2 will be
mined to allow the gas line to be moved. The last area of mining will be the Mining Area 4
which is west of the Gas Well. The mining of the deposit will occur to the limits shown on Map
C-2B and will be mined to a slope no steeper than 2H:1 V in the overburden and near vertical
through the gravel. The Cugnini Pit will continue to produce a majority of Four Corner's local
aggregate demand. No explosives will be used on-site for the mining operation. The distribution
of the acreage and corresponding material amounts for the permit area is shown in Table D-1.
One important aspect of the plan is to use excess overburden to fill the two pre-existing steep
gullies which will make the land more usable after reclamation. These are called valley Fills #1
and #2.
Cugnini Pit, November 2009 D-2
