III. COMMENTS-COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made during the
inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the facts or
evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection conducted by Joe Dudash of the Colorado DRMS.The Hawk's Nest Mine is a
revoked and reclaimed underground mine site.Reclamation was accomplished with forfeited bond money.
Since it is a revoked site, the inspection frequency was reduced on October 22,2005 to one complete inspection
and three partial inspections each calendar year. The Hawk's Nest Mine consists of an east section and a west
section.
East Mine Section
The county road that serves as the access road to the reclaimed mine site was passable. The mud slide on the
north side of the road was barely encroaching onto the edge of the road. However, this did not appear to be a
problem with access.
The vegetative cover on the east end of this mine section was poor to moderate while the west end vegetative
cover was good. The berm along the river was functional. There were no problems with erosional gullying. The
riprapped drainage ditches that serve the two road culverts were in place.
West Mine Section
The road across the railroad tracks that leads to the west section was dry and passable. There were no railcars on
site to block entry.
The former mine ID sign was on the ground next to the railroad crossing sign. The stream buffer zone signs
were up paralleling the river. The well cap was on the pvc pipe.
The sedimentation pond was dry. The pond inslopes and outslopes were well vegetated. The concrete
combination spillway was in place and was functional.
The vegetative cover was very good. There were no signs of erosional problems.
c:/word2007/hawksnest/insp 1009
