Sherman
Executive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
The Division has received Colowyo's 28 September 2009 West Pit Fill Monitoring
Report and the 5 October 2009 South Taylor Fill Monitoring Report. Both reports were
received by the Division on 13 October 2009. Thank you for your timely submittal of
these reports. Based on the Division's review of these reports, the Division has the
following comments.
West Pit Fill
Placement of material on the West Pit Fill has been completed and no new material was
placed on the fill in the third quarter. Colowyo will remove stockpiled material from the
fill down to approximately 7,400 feet in elevation. Colowyo (through their registered
professional engineer, Tom Peterson) has indicated that the fill has remained stable since
the last reporting quarter. The reclaimed surfaces remain stable and no erosional
problems were noted. A small flow of less than two gallons per minute was noted at the
toe of the underdrain and where the toe of the fill intersects the West Taylor Road.
Colowyo has indicated that there has been very little movement of the fill (less than 0.07
feet) in the recent reporting quarter. The conclusions of the report correlate with the
observations of the Division on their monthly inspections. The Division has no questions
regarding the West Pit Fill Monitoring Report for the third quarter 2009.
South Taylor Fills
The South Taylor Fills noted in the report are the East Taylor Fill and the West Taylor
Fills. These fills are both currently being used for fill placement. In the report Colowyo
has indicated that the A-A' underdrain is almost complete and almost half of the drain
has been covered, the B-B' has been completed to the confluence of the A-A' underdrain
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
