The Juniper Mountain Gravel Pit is located east County Road 57 and north of the Juniper
Mountain Limestone Quarry. A representative from Moffat County Limestone accompanied the inspector on site.
The mine identification sign and affected area boundary markers are in. place and in compliance with Rule 3.1.12.
The sign is located at the entrance to the site off the main road where it enters the permit boundary. Permit
boundaries are marked by t-posts and geological features that are easily identifiable.
The inspector observed a loader and trucks removing stockpiled pea gravel from the site. No large highwalls or
excavations are noted at this time. Some areas appear to be reclaimed. Crested and slender wheat grasses are up to
two feet high in these areas. Reclamation is progressing on the site.
In a swale retention pond area, the inspector noted young tamarisk and possible bull thistle. Noxious and/or
problematic weed infestation (tamarisk and possible thistle) were observed within the affected area. The infestation,
if not controlled, will most likely hinder and/or delay successful reclamation of this site and contribute to off-site
spreading and establishment of these weeds. A weed control plan developed in consultation with, and approved by,
the appropriate local weed control authority must be submitted as a technical revision to this permit. Weed
infestation is noted as a problem with the corrective action(s) and correction date specified on the last page of this
report. Significant progress toward control of on-site weeds must be demonstrated within three years to avoid
potential Board action.
No erosion or sedimentation issues were observed. There were no petroleum storage units or other hazardous
materials noted on site. The site was clear of debris and mine related trash.
A reclamation bond up date for this site is due. One will be done soon and take into account areas reclaimed as well
as current disturbance areas. It appears the bond of $43,271.00 is sufficient to finish reclamation however.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Russ Means at the Division of Reclamation, Mining and
Safety, Grand Junction Field Office, 101 South 3rd Street, Room 301, Grand Junction, Colorado 81501, phone no.
970-241-1117.
I & E Contact Address cc:
?
