(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1996-007
INSPECTION DATE 9/24/09 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS RCO
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was performed by the Division as part of its monitoring of Construction Materials 112c permits. The site
was not active at the time of the inspection, and no one was present during the inspection. The required permit ID sign
was posted on the entrance gate at the highway right-of-way fence. (Note: the permit number for the previous 111 permit
held by the operator at this site is also posted on the gate.) The permit boundaries are adequately marked by steel fence
posts. The land on which the permit is located is open to the landowner's grazing livestock, which can knock downt the
markers, so regular monitoring of the markers is recommended.
A good gravel road provides access from the highway. There are several sediment and runoff control structures built
along the road up to the pit, to contain the sand and fine gravel that is transported from the disturbed areas during rain
events. The aggregate mined here is very erodible, but the operator has built and maintained adequate structures to
control it. The operator is reminded that regular future monitoring and maintenance of the containment structures is
needed. Note: though the berms and sediment ponds are controlling the runoff, there are several straw or excelsior
wattles that have come unanchored and need to be restaked to be made functional again. This is not noted as a problem
at this time.
There was no equipment or fuel in the permit area. There were several stockpiles of material throughout the pit areas.
Topsoil is thin in this location, but the operator has stockpiled a good amount of it above the western pit highwall. It is
revegetated with range grasses, which seems to be controlling erosion. Most of the pit slopes are about 2:1 gradient, but
they do not exhibit any erosion. Some of the pit slopes are somewhat vegetated with grasses. No weeds were observed
in the pit, on the slopes, on the topsoil, or on any product stockpiles. The site is very orderly and clean, and the operator
is to be commended. The only item to note here is to watch for grazing pressure from the livestock on this ranch,
especially when portions of the site are to be formally revegetated for reclamation.
No further items were observed during the inspection. Responses to this inspection report should be directed to this
inspector at the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety, 691 County Road 233, Suite A-2, Durango, Colorado 81301.
(Please note: As of 7/1/08 the Durango Field Office moved to the new address, shown above.
