I spoke with Jerry Henderson of Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Hazardous Materials Waste Management Division, Solid Waste Unit (SWU) regarding the Division's pending SL4 decision. I asked Jerry if the SWU wished to visit the Keenesburg Mine site for an inspection prior to the Division making a proposed decision on the SL4 bond release. He stated that it would not be necessary for the CDPHE-SWU to inspect the site prior to the DRMS's proposed decision. He did add that Coors and the SWU need to update their cost estimate with the CDPHE, and CDPHE has a pending request from Coors Energy Company to decrease ground water monitoring. We agreed that these were not items that would impact the DRMS decision. I let Jerry know that I would be conducting an inspection at the Keenesburg Mine on October 29, 2009, and he is welcome to accompany me if he wished. I would be conducting a regular inspection but we could look at those areas that are covered in this bond release application. He said Cindy Smith is the inspector who covers that part of Weld County. He would give her my contact information and she would be in touch if she wishes to go with me. But he did not feel that the SWU needed to conduct an inspection prior to the DRMS's proposed decision. I also told him that I did not believe that our decision precludes his department from implementing any of their rules. We finished by discussing that our departments, DRMS and CDPHE,HMWMD-SWU, and Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment-Solid Waste, will be coordinating a meeting between the three agencies. Jerry will be the contact from CDPHE, and I directed him to contact Dan Hernandez regarding coordinating this meeting.
