(Page 3)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1981-014
INSPECTION DATE 9/15/09
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS RCO
The operator strips topsoil prior to excavation, and stockpiles it near the margins of the pit for replacement during
reclamation. There was no obvious erosion of the topsoil. The operator is reminded that the topsoil is to be seeded with
grass while it is stockpiled, and all noxious weeds on the piles must be controlled (or else the infestation will be spread
across the site).
The stormwater appears to be captured in the pit, but it is not clear whether all runoff from non-pit areas is adequately
controlled. It is important that the operator provide complete and adequate controls due to the potential to contaminate
the nearby Slate River and irrigation ditches. This is not noted as a problem in this report, but the operator is urged to
ensure adequate containment.
The affected area NE of the river has not been disturbed in several years, but no reclamation has occurred either. The
operator is urged to check that area for drainage controls (to prevent runoff from reaching the river) as well as the stability
of the reject material that is piled at the crest of the bank slopes (to prevent sedimentation into the river corridor). There is
a well-defined setback from the river shown on the phase boundary maps (and those setbacks and phase boundaries
must be marked also).
The bond amount is $119,492, but it is due for review. The Division will recalculate the bond and send the updated
figures to the operator. If an increase is indicated the operator will have 60 days after notification to provide the increased
bond.
No further items were observed during the inspection. Responses to this inspection report should be directed to this
inspector at the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety, 691 County Road 233, Suite A-2, Durango, Colorado 81301.
(Please As of 7/1/08 the Durango Field Office moved to the new address, shown above.
