Breakfast fuels kids for school ---
Moms, don't send your young
scholars off to school on last
night's dinner. Lunch is a long time
off, and they'll have a hard time
keeping up with their breakfast-
eating buddies.
Youngsters who eat breakfast be-
fore their morning classes are more
alert, says registered dietitian Judy
Barbe, nutrition program director
for Western Dairy Association.
Studies show breakfast-eaters
concentrate better. Their problem-
solving skills are sharper. Memo-
ries are keener and they do better
on tests. They are tardy less often,
attend school more regularly, make
fewer trips to the nurse's office,
and are less likely to be out of
sorts.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
TOWN OF DOVE CREEK
Has Elevated Levels of Total Trihalomethanes
Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our
customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to cor-
rect this situation.
We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Testing results we received over
the last year show that our system exceeds the maximum contaminant level (MCL), for total tri-
halomethanes. The MCL for total trihalomethanes is 0.080 milligrams per liter (ntg/L). The running an-
nual average level of total trihalomethanes for (calendar quarter) 2nd Quarter, 2009 was (level) 0.082
mg/L.
What does this mean? What should I do?
?At this time, no alternative source of water is necessary. However, if you have any specific health
concerns, consult yom doctor.
?This is not an immediate risk. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However,
some people who drink water containing total trihalomethanes in excess of the MCL over many years
may experience problems with their liver, kidneys or central nervous system, and may have an increased
risk of getting cancer.
"'hat happened? What is being done?
Total trihalomethanes are byproducts of drinking water disinfection and are common at low levels in
many drinking water systems. Disinfection of drinking water is required to ensure that harmful con-
taminants such as bacteria, viruses and other microbial pathogens do not exist in the finished water.
However, the disinfectant itself can react with naturally-occurring materials in the water to form unin-
tended byproducts that may pose health risks. An operational goal for drinking water systems is to max-
mize their disinfection efficiency while limiting the formation of these disinfection byproducts.
(Describe corrective action)
Decrease chlorine residual levels entering distribution system, initiate regular scheduled program of
flushing fire hydrants in town to decrease water age, monitor and treat algae growth in the Dove Creek
canal and town reservoir.
We anticipate resolving the problem within (estimated time frame) the third quarter, 2009. For more in-
formation, please contact (name of contact) Chris Kramer at (phone number) (970) 677-2255 or (mail-
ing address) Town of Dove Creek, P.O. Box 508, Dove Creek, CO 81324.
Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may
not have received this notice directly (for example. people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and
businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
