Mountain Coal Company, LLC
West Elk Mine
High Voltage Overhead Transmission Line Installation
Proiect Description
The project consists of constructing a new 12,470 volt overhead electric power transmission line
extension to provide electric power for new facilities within the existing disturbed area of the
West Elk Mine. The new line will connect to the existing 12,470 volt overhead line that feeds the
West Elk Mine surface facilities and will terminate at the existing Lower Refuse Pile location as
shown on West Elk Mine Facilities Powerline drawing. The new line installation will consist of
the following.
Installation of nine (9) new direct burial wood poles expected to be 50-55 feet high.
A high voltage safety switch arrangement mounted on structure 7A.
Approximately 1,800 feet of overhead power conductors. There will be three (3) runs of 556
ASCR line, one run of 4/0 ground conductor and one run of static wire.
The line will be constructed entirely within previously disturbed areas. Existing light use roads
and trails will be used for access to the pole locations for construction. Some brush clearing will
be required on existing trails to allow access by line trucks for setting poles. No new light use
road construction is expected to be necessary for long term access to the structures.
09/28/09 MR 358
