The Water Treatment Pilot
Installation is needed to evaluate both the feasibility and costs of treating mine discharge water to address
washplant feed requirements and meet applicable effluent water quality standards. The location of the
proposed Water Treatment Pilot Installation is shown on Map 24, Surface Facilities and Freshwater
Systems, with details provided by drawings in Exhibit 49T.
The proposed Water Treatment Pilot Installation will consist of several skid-mounted modular units and
associated connecting piping and power connections. The system is designed to withdraw mine discharge
water from the existing Area 1 Pit; treat the water using an electro-coagulation unit, multi-media,
filtration tanks, and a reverse osmosis unit, with sampling and recycle; dewater the process waste stream;
and discharge the treated water to either the Washplant II feed-water system or Sedimentation Pond D. It
is anticipated that the system will be delivered, installed, and the required testing completed over a 6-8
week time period. Following completion of the required testing, test results will be reviewed and
analyzed as the basis for planning and management decisions on any future water treatment plans. It is
anticipated that the Pilot Installation components will be disconnected and moved off-site following
completion of the required testing, although the possibility exists that some components may be
temporarily stored on-site pending review and decisions on any future water treatment plans.
As a temporary test installation, no permanent pads or infrastructure will be established in conjunction
with this project. Because the Pilot Installation will be located in an existing disturbance area adjacent to
the Washplant II Facility,.there will be no new disturbance associated with the project, therefore, the
associated reclamation costs will be limited to the cost of loading and transporting the Pilot Installation
components off-site, as summarized by the accompanying Reclamation Cost Estimate.
G:\Environmental\REVISION\MINOR-RV\MR09-239 Water Treatment Pilot Install\MR09-239 Water Treatment Pilot Install
TL.doc
