• 2.04.4 CULTURAL AND HISTORIC RESOURCE INFORMATION
(1) During the first week of May 1991, the Grand River Institute
performed a Class III cultural resource inventory of 300 acres within
the proposed impact area of the proposed Hamilton Mine. A copy of the
report is included in Exhibit 2. Appendix B of the report which is
the Site and Isolated Find Forms is not included in Exhibit 2. This
information was sent to the State Historic Preservation Officer but
it is very voluminous and is not considered critical to the analysis
of the results of the cultural resource inventory.
Five prehistoric archaeological sites, two historic
EuroAmerican sites and four isolated finds were identified and
recorded. Two of the sites, SMN3761 and SMN3760, were identified by
the Grand River Institute as eligible and potentially eligible for
listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
Site 5MN3761 is in the area where mining is to take place.
This site will be avoided. The boundaries of this site will be marked
in the field by fence posts or by some other means prior to the
commencement of any mining activities near the site.
During June 1991 a Class III cultural resource inventory was
performed on an additional 65 acres within the mine permit area and
site SMN3760 was tested for evaluative purposes. As a result of the
survey one historic EuroAmerican site (SMN3784) and one isolated find
(5MN3765) were identified and recorded. Both were field evaluated as
• not eligible. Site SMN3760, which was tested, was found likely to
yield additional significant information and is evaluated as eligible.
A Data Recovery Plan for Site SMN3760 was prepared and
submitted to the Colorado Historical Society. Test excavations of the
site were performed late in 1991. The test excavations were closed
at the end of November, 1991. The text provided valuable new
information concerning the area prehistory.
Copies of the Data Recovery Plan, the report documenting the
June 1991 inventory and a Grand River Institute letter dated February
12, 1992 concerning the data recovery from Site 5MN3760 are included
in Exhibit 2.
During June 1992, the Grand River Institute performed a
Class III cultural resource inventory of the area to be disturbed by
mining area number 3. Seven prehistoric archaeological sites were
identified (SMN4302, SMN4304 through SMN4308 and SMN4317), and
thirteen isolated finds (SMN4303, SMN409 through SMN4316 and SMN4318
through SMN4321) were located and recorded. Sites SMN4304 through
SMN4307 were field evaluated as eligible for listing on the NRHP. The
remaining sites and isolated finds were evaluated as not eligible.
The eligible sites will be avoided by the mine. The boundaries of the
sites will be marked in the field by fence posts or by some other
means prior to the commencement of any mining activities near the
sites. A copy of the management summary report which is dated July
• 15, 1992 is included in Exhibit 2.
2.04-3 July 1992
