DRMS had raised questions concerning the need to reevaluate and possibly revise
revegetation strategies and/or goals, given the possibly conflicting objectives of the current
revegetation plan. The potential conflict arises due to the heavy presence of the aggressively
competitive species, cheatgrass, in significant portions of the permit area. More definitive
choices may need to be made in some reclaimed area locations, as to whether focus of
revegetation efforts should be to establish a diverse, native dominated shrub grassland
community, or whether use of introduced perennial species that may be better able to
establish and persist in the presence of cheatgrass competition should be emphasized.
Depending on the resolution of this issue, modifications of the currently approved
revegetation plan may be warranted, including changes to seedmixes and success standards.
DRMS suggested that this issue should be the focus of a site visit/meeting involving
representatives of DRMS, BME, BLM, and CDOW. BME has indicated agreement with the
on-site meeting suggestion, and arrangements are underway to schedule the meeting. The
Division has no further questions or comments regarding this item at this time.
Depending on the outcome of the meeting and subsequent discussions, revision of the
revegetation plan may be requested.
Office of
Mined Land Reclamation
Denver • Grand Junction • Durango
Office of
Active and Inactive Mines
