112 APPLICATION PAGE 20 OF 35
•
3) The operator shall provide an estimate of the project water requirements including flow rates and annual
volumes for development, mining and reclamation phases of the project.
During sand and gravel mining operations, the site will need to be dewatered to
access all of the sand and gravel. The groundwater collected within the mining areas
will be pumped into the 33 Road Ditch which is located west of the project area. This
ditch is owned and operated by the Grand Valley Drainage District. The groundwater
will be pumped from the mining operations using pumps with a discharge capacity of
approximately 0.6 cubic feet per second, during the mining of the sand and gravel,
and for a portion of the backfill placement. On a yearly basis, the applicant estimates
it will require 30 days for removal of the sand and gravel, and 60 days for backfilling.
Therefore, on a yearly basis, the applicant may discharge approximately 146 million
gallons of groundwater into the 33 Road Ditch, which flows into the Colorado River.
Reclamation plantings for the site will not require an irrigated water source.
4) The operator shall indicate the projected amount from each of the sources of water to supply the project
water requirements for mining operation and reclamation
Water collected within the pit will also be used for dust control and gravel crushing
within the project site. This could amount to as much 24,000 gallons per day for dust
control and 10,000 gallons per day for gravel crushing.
• No irrigated water source will be required for reclamation on the site. The revegetation
seed mix will be planted during the wet spring or fall planting seasons. Natural moisture
will be used to establish and maintain the vegetation.
5) The operator shall affirmatively state that the operator has acquired (or has applied for) a National
Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit from the Water Quality Control Division at the
Colorado Department of Health, if necessary.
The operator will obtain all necessary NPDES permits prior to any sand and gravel
mining work.
