A C G
•
Austin Civil Group, Inc.
Land Planning - Civil Engineering - Development Services
August 28, 2009
Mr. Travis Marshall
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety, Grand Junction Field Office
101 S. 3`d St., Suite 301
Grand Junction, Colorado 81501
Re: 32.5 Road Gravel Pit, File No. M-2009-035,112c
Responses to Preliminary Adequacy Review
Dear Mr. Marshall:
Based on your review of our application we have made the following clarifications. Please note
as your are reviewing the project that we have added 2 sheets to both Exhibit D and Exhibit F
respectively. The hope is to clarify the specific activities for each of the Exhibits. We have also
revised our hatching for clarity. See our responses to your review in Blue below.
1. EXHIBIT C - Pre-mining and Mine Plan Maps (Rule 6.4.3(e)):
Identify the existing type of present vegetation covering the affected lands.
• RESPONSE: An existing vegetation map is included with the Exhibits (C.2). The map
identifies general areas of the existing vegetation.
• Please clearly label the permit boundary and be sure that a scale is provided on
both the pre-mining and mine plan maps.
RESPONSE: Scale is provided on maps. Clarifications were made for the permit
boundary by adding text along the perimeter. See Map C.1.
2. EXHIBIT D - Mining Plan (Rule 6.4.4):
• Specify the estimated size of areas to be worked at any one time;
RESPONSE: The maximum area to be worked at one time will be four (4) acres.
Revised on Page 9 of the Exhibits.
• The Mine plan states that 30.25 acres will be mined for sand and gravel. The
application also states that 30.25 acres will be included in the permit area. The
mine plan map shows two mine phases, Phase 1 consists of 7.97 acres and
Phase 2 consists of 22.28 acres for a total of 30.25 acres. It appears that more
than 30.25 acres will be required to mine the proposed operation. The addition
required acreage will likely be needed for access roads, topsoil stockpiles,
overburden stockpiles, water settling ponds and materials processing. Please
describe how the operation will only affect 30.25 acres.
RESPONSE: Only 30.25 acres will be mined. Other disturbances include access road
improvements and installation of outlet pipes to discharge groundwater during mining
operations. Amendment for the revised permit area is included with these responses.
Clarified in the first paragraph of this section.

336 main street - suite 203 - grand junction, colorado 81501 - 970-242-7540 phone - 970-255-1212 fax
