employed when determining post-reclamation success.
Diversity success criteria were arrived at by utilizing herbaceous cover data from the pre-mining
inventory. Four species were found to comprise 43.4 percent of the diversity: Poa pratensis
(Kentucky Bluegrass), Ag_ropyron smithii (Western Wheatgrass), Achillea lanulosa (Western
Yarrow), and Stipa viridula (Green Needle Grass), which represent three perennial, cool season
grasses and one perennial forb. The revegetation objective for diversity is to establish a similar
community on the reclaimed areas. As with the cover and woody plant density standard, the
diversity success standard is broken down into three distinct reclaimed areas: the pre-2009
grassland area, the 2009-forward area and the sagebrush steppe area.
Diversity on the pre-2009 reclamation will contain:
n) At least two cool season innerennial grasses x6fli bettznePn 30/ and ';n% relative omupr
(composition), and
b) All forbs combined with between 1 % and 50% relative cover (composition).
Diversity on the 2009-forward grassland area reclamation will contain:
a) At least three native cool season perennial grasses with between 3% and 50% relative
cover (composition), and
b) At least one perennial forb or shrub with between 2% and 50% relative cover
(composition), and
c) A total of all forbs or all shrubs combined with between 4% and 50% relative cover
(composition), or
d) If five or more native cool season perennial grass taxa contribute between 3% and
50% composition, the requirement for perennial forbs and shrubs shall be limited to
1 % or more of the relative cover.
The 2009-forward sagebrush steppe area reclamation will contain:
At least four native perennial species, each more than 3% composition, a minimum of
two of which are grasses and a minimum of one of which is a forb, with the following
caveat:
If no single forb species exceeds 3% composition, the forb requirement can be
met if.
a) At least two native perennial forb species combined comprise at least
2% composition, or;
Proposed Decision and Findings of Compliance 14 September 2009
Permit Renewal 05 Page 63
