Park County Environmental Health Department
P.O. Box 216 • Fairplay, CO 80440
Phone: 719-836-4267 • FAX: 719-836-4266
Ansley Gravel Pit Expansion Permit
August 20th, 2009
EXHIBIT I., SOILS INFORMA TION
The following resources were used in developing soils information at the current Ansley Pit
locale:
Parker, Ben H., Jr. (1974) The Gold Placers of Colorado, Colorado School of Mines.
Soils Conservation Service (SCS). 1976. Range Site Description for Mountain Outwash (Code 316).
Geologic Wonders of South Park, Colorado, 2001, by Donald P. McGookey.
The Ansley Gravel Pit materials are located along the South Platte River south east of Fairplay,
Colorado along Colorado Highway 9. They primarily consist of glacial origins and ancient
streambed alluviums related to lateral and terminal moraines of the final Wisconsin era glacial
retreat. Later outwash and flattening have left what appears to be largely untouched (by man)
open fields of slightly sorted cobbles and sandy gravels with a thin topsoil supporting grasses
and very low growing forbs.
Recent mining and excavation have revealed cuts and bladed off cross sections, which appear
identical to cross-sections, revealed to the east by stream action along the high banks. The
sands and gravels are comprised of granitic gneisses, decomposed Jurassic sandstones and
volcanic and metamorphic materials from a sundry assortment of upstream and upslope source
geology.
SIZING ESTIMATES OF GRAVELS on the ANSLEY CLAIM
Plus 24" cobble w/ few greater than 36" 10%
Plus 6 " rocks (minus 24") 10%
Plus 2" rocks (minus 6 inch) 30%
Sands (minus 2 inch) 40%
Clays and very fine silts / sands 10%
The remnants of virgin gravels on this site show thickness of 20 to 30 feet along the previously
worked pits on the west side and the north side of the current operation. No ultimate bedrock
was observed which might be sandstones and the adjacent Maroon Frm. At depth.
Photos 1, 2 and 3 are representative of typical soil profiles on site.
